Men’s 1st Team Continue Streak

Men’s 1st team continued their Division 1 streak.  Unfortunately the streak is an unwanted winless one!

The team battled hard but went down 13-5 at home to Magdala.  Special mention to Tom Lockey who won his first set in the 1st team (and now has 4 of them) and Ian Staples who was playing in his first match for the club and also managed to pick-up a set.

Mixed team take out Musters in Div 1

As with the Men 2014 is the first year Ravenshead have played in the Notts League Division 1.

Musters (3rd in 2013) were the opposition and home court advantage combined with the fact that none of the Musters men that had soundly beaten Ravenshead Men’s team were in attendance added to the belief that this wasn’t going to be a thrashing.

With 2 of our regular mixed players having babies or enjoying honeymoons and captain Denise having a rest from 1st Mixed duty this summer it meant debuts for Katie Fuller and Karen Harvey.  Both Katie and Karen seemed unfazed by playing in Division 1 and in fact seemed to enjoy a harder ball being hit their way most of the time.

Karen in particular took the attack to the opposition in the first rubber leaving her partner Chris Holmes with little more to do then clear up at the net or fetch more balls for Karen to whack!.

Ravenshead won the first 2 rubbers 4-2 and 3.5-2.5 to leave the scores 7.5-4.5 going into the final rubber.  A step up in play and a calf injury hampering Musters first pairing male meant 4.5 of the final 6 sets came Ravenshead way along with a 12-6 victory.

Played 1, won 1 – 100% record.  Not sure it will stay that way!!! 🙂

FIRST LADIES WIN IN DIVISION 3

With Sunday being fathers day we struggled to get a team but Steph and Sarah stepped in to enable us to get this win. Many thanks to you both.

It was a close match with a game score of 70 – 70 but a vital win for Ravenshead 10 – 8. Hoping to win at least 1 more so we can stay in this division. Enjoyed by all.

Mens 2nd – 3 from 3

Thursday night saw the mens 2nd team win a 3rd consecutive match to maintain the 100% start to the season.

Facing the 2nd team from the Park was a bit of an unknown quantity, as they were promoted from division 3 last season, without losing a match. There were a couple of familiar faces from their 1st team in the top pair, so having been beaten comprehensively by them 9-3 in the 1st division last season, there was a little concern. However, with our top pair Tom Lockey and John Clissold taking a set off them in the final rubber and Adam Buckley finishing the second set tie breaker against their 3rd pair with a massive ace, the victory ended up being by the comfortable margin of 8-4.

Could this be another promotion campaign?

1st Mens Vs Musters

After being on the end of a 17-1 hammering in the clubs first ever Division 1 match, a trip away to visit the reigning champions Musters would not have seen short odds on a Ravenshead win.

An improved performance still ended in a 15.5-2.5 defeat.  2 sets for 1st pair Chris Holmes and Barry Seamons who are starting to recover from injuries (not yet though) and 0.5 sets for Ed Blount and Craig Flint who also had a tough battle against the Musters 3rd pair and were unlucky not to gain more.

Two tough away matches on astroturf are out of the way.  I’m sure the remaining matches will also be tough but a return to hardcourts should hopefully improve our chances of sneaking a victory.

Mens 2nd – Big Win

After a winning start to the season, the men’s 2nd team won again this time away at East Bridgford in glorious sunshine by the impressive margin of 12-0. Although 1st pair Tom Lockey and John Clissold and 2nd pair Ross Hardwick and Jon Banner had relatively comfortable wins in all sets, a special mention must be made for 3rd pair Rob Harwood and Adam Buckley who only dropped a single game over the 4 sets. Well done guys!

Ladies vs Newark

After loss of 1st ladies match we were hoping to secure a win against Newark, but unfortunately it was not to be. Although many of the sets were very close with 4 -6 scores we ended with a loss of 12-6. Well done to Lindsay and Angela for highest scores. Enjoyed by all.

LADIES vs Musters

1st ladies match of the season was played at Musters in hot weather conditions.Struggled to get our A team together so Steph, Yvonne and Janet stepped in to help.

Angela and Karen, thank you for your usual good standard of play, but most credit must go to …Yvonne who recently had ankle injury, Janet 72 and hip op last Dec so has not played 6 sets for months and Steph who has never played 6 sets, especially in the heat!! We expected her to pull out after 2 sets, she stuck it out and played all 6 sets.

Very proud of commitment to the club.     Denise

Mens 2nd – A Better Start!

After a disappointing 2013 season for the Mens 2nd team, including relegation back to division 2 of the short format league. It was an excellent start to 2014, on a rainy Thursday, with an 8-4 victory over Southwell.

With a few regulars missing, two of the team were making their debuts and I’m pretty sure both Rob Harwood and Nick Robinson will have enjoyed the success of each taking 3 out of 4 sets in their respective pairings.

After the first 2 rubbers it looked like being a very close encounter with the scores tied at 3-3. However during the 2 set finale, Ravenshead took control winning 5 of the last 6 sets. Top pair Tom Lockey and John Clissold had a share of the spoils (4-6, 7-6) with a Southwell pair that only dropped a total of 3 games in their first 2 sets. In addition, second pair Rick Drury and Rob Harwood and third pair Stuart Boddington and Nick Robinson had very impressive wins taking both of their last two sets comfortably.

Lets hope this is the start of another promotion campaign 😉

Welcome to Division 1!!!

The Mens team played their first ever match in Division 1 tonight.  Up against a very strong David Lloyd West Bridgford side including former World 146 Allen Belobrajdic and former World ranked doubles player David Barton,  Ravenshead lost 17-1.  It’s never nice to lose but it’s good to appreciate being on court with some high quality tennis players.

Hopefully they will all not be so tough although the next 2 matches are also away which doesn’t help.

Man of the Match: Tom Lockey who was still smiling at the end having passed his driving test just a few hours earlier 🙂

Back to the practice courts guys!
