Super Finals Night!

Last Wednesday saw this years finals night for the clubs singles tournaments. With a decent crowd and a top class barbecue provided by head chef Steve Blount, it was always going to be a good night.

The night started with the Men’s semi-finals, on court one Craig Flint saw off a spirited challenge from Tom Lockey 6-3 and on court two Arthur showed his experience to see off son Adam 6-1 in all Buckley family match.

This was followed by the Men’s Plate final? where Rob Harwood in his first season at the club eventually overcame the inventor of this particular competition Rick Drury 6-4 in a very entertaining affair.

Then the time came for the start of the main events, starting with the Ladies final. Our illustrious Chair Angela Blount had to take a break from supervising husband Steve’s Barbecue to take on the clubs reigning champion Katie Fuller. After a tight start with Angela doing her utmost to stay on terms and nullify the huge ground strokes coming from the other end, Katie eventually proved too powerful and ran out a deserved 6-2 winner.

The last match of the night was the Men’s final, with the guarantee of a new name on the honours board after the withdrawal of multiple champion Chris Holmes with a dodgy back. The final started as a cagey battle with four consecutive breaks of serve. Both players then found their form and produced some quite scintillating Tennis with Craig’s doggedly determined ground strokes and Arthurs powerful serves and volleys taking it to 4-4. As anyone who’s ever played at the club will know, no match involving Craig would ever be complete without a stone-dead net-cord and this particular one proved to finally break Arthurs resolve and helped Craig to run out the 6-4 winner.

I’m sure everyone there would like to join me in congratulating all of the players involved in a thoroughly entertaining nights Tennis and particularly in thanking Angela and Steve for organising the food and drink, which set the tone for the whole night. Great stuff folks!

The Geoff Perry Trophy

After twice being postponed due to heavy rain, the Geoff Perry Trophy finally took place on Saturday, in rather more pleasant early summer weather. With a new format for the 2014 season, pairs were drawn to bring stronger and weaker players together, to try and guarantee even sets where possible. The intent was for this to be a mixed tournament but with 10 Men and only 6 Ladies there were a couple of all male pairs.

After 3 rounds of closely fought sets the the only unbeaten pairs in the draw were Tom Lockey and Denise Ferriman and the all male pairing of Rick Drury and our senior statesman Jan Rek. In keeping with the rest of the day, the final was a very close affair, with Rick and Jan winning on a tie-breaker 7-6. The only thing to decide now, is which of them will be listed as the lady on our lovely new honours board, I’m sure we’ve all got our thoughts on this!

Thanks to all who took part to make this a thoroughly enjoyable and successful day, particularly Janet Perry who as well as taking part herself, was on hand to present the trophy. I’m sure Geoff would have approved.

Ravenshead win Notts LTA Club Champs (Shh don’t tell David Lloyd!!)

Notts LTA Club Champions Tournament  2013

This is an invitational tournament for all Notts LTA affiliated tennis clubs to submit their club champion winner (or runner up in their absence). Competitions were run for ladies and mens singles and doubles. Representing Ravenshead: Craig and Eddie in the mens doubles and Eddie for the mens singles, but also appearing in the mens doubles was Ravenshead’s first mens pair Chris and Barry and Chris in the singles.

27 July 2013 Men Doubles
Entry numbers into the tournament were a little disappointing, teams included Mansfield, Welbeck, David Lloyd Nottm (aka Ravenshead) and Ravenshead. The format was one set against each pair with the top two to battle out in a final for the championship and their names scratched into the honours board at the Notts LTA County Ground in the Park.

The weather was fantastic  – tennis as it was supposed to be played, on a lawn (and below the knees).

The first draw for Ravenshead was against Welbeck, an unknown to us. It was a close game, at 5-6 down Ravenshead had chances to take it to 6 all, but Welbeck proved strong and came out on top 7-5.  The second round was a grudge match against Chris and Barry, who had been pushed hard by Mansfield in the first round but came out on top. Chris and Barry dominated throughout and came out victorious (6-1).  The final round against Mansfield and was a fight between third and forth. Mansfield looked wounded coming off two defeats and Craig’s drive volleys and net cords were a sign that Ravenshead were back. Comfortable winners 6-3, but it was all too late.

Chris and Barry moved into the final with 3 wins and looking confident as a short break was taken, Chris tucked into his picnic box (why anyone keeps crisps in a cool box I do not know!!), Barry had been baking sausage rolls (and very good they were too).

As Chris and Barry stepped onto the court, they looked like the were walking onto the hallowed turf of Wimbledon, dressed in their whites. Barry asked for a special mention on his new Roger Federer Nike polo shirt, purchased specifically for the occasion. The crowds were 3 deep in places, well maybe momentarily.  The final was best of 3 sets.  A slow start for Chris and Barry and the set was nearly over, 3-5 and 3 set points to Welbeck, Barry had a short conversation with the fence. I am not sure what motivational words the fence had to say but momentum switched as they moved on to take the set 7-5. The second set was wrapped up reasonably quickly and Ravensheads top mens pair came out winners of the Notts LTA Mens Doubles Champions.

Overall, a good day of tennis and as the club is not scratched into the honours board, Ravenshead we can consider our club mens doubles club champions!!

Well done Chris and Barry.

28 July 2013 Mens Singles
After overnight rain we were moved onto familiar ground, hard courts (tennis as we know it – backs against the fence with loads of top spin).

Entry numbers again were disappointing with 6 entries from W. Bridgford, Welbeck, Mansfield, Keyworth, DL and Ravenshead.  The format was one set against each person, with the top two playing a best of 3 set final (if your not thinking this already, that is a lot of singles tennis).

As the first players to arrive the Chris v Eddie match was first up.  After Eddie taking a 3-2 lead Chris started to pick on Eddie’s weak links (I won’t disclose what that weakness might be!!).  Chris took the set 6-3.

The West Bridgford entry appeared the bookies early favourite, known by the organisers, name already on the honours board, son of an GB tennis coach and a regular on the national tour. As the sets fell by, his odds grew shorter, quickly despatching opponents to love (Eddie included, but “I did get to 40 on 3 occasions”) and Chris took 2 games off him. It became a race for the runners up spot between Chris and Mansfield. Mansfield came out on top taking the crucial set 7-5.  Chris claimed third spot (winning three sets) and Eddie fifth (with one victory).

As the final started the galleries were getting noisy with excitement as a shock looked on the cards in the first set.  The organisers asked for silence, boo, this was the ‘Peoples Sunday’ we had our underdog from Mansfield to support.  WB came out on top 6-4, 6-2 (I think). The winner received a sword (what a prize!!).

Men’s Team Promoted to Division 1

Following the recent 9-9 draw against Woodthorpe the 1st Men’s team were left with a slim chance of promotion, needing Woodthorpe to lose quite heavily against West Bridgford ‘A’, a team that had struggled so far this season.

The result the team needed duly happened, with Woodthorpe losing 13-5 to enable us to hang on to the 2nd promotion spot by 1 set, ending level on points with Woodthorpe!

Thanks to Jon Banner, Conan Bellas,  Eddie Blount,  Arthur Buckley, Craig Flint, Chris Holmes,  Tom Lockey and Barry Seamons who all played a part in the teams promotion.

This makes it back to back promotion for all 3 of Ravenshead’s 1st teams.  Each team will be playing in the highest Division achieved in the clubs history.  Pretty good 2013 I would say. 🙂

Clabburn Trophy Result 2013

The Clabburn Tournament was played on a sunny Saturday afternoon.  The format was a type of round robin mixed doubles.  No partner is required to play, you just turn up!

Winners were Chris Holmes and Jane Fuller, beating Craig Flint and Angela Blount 6-4 in the final.

Thanks to all those who attended and especially those who brought cakes and cookies, yum!

Promotion to Division 1 for the Mixed Team

Sunday September 15th marked a truly historic day in the Clubs History.  Following a home win against Retford the 1st Mixed team will spend 2014 among the top teams in the County after gaining promotion from Division 2.  The match was won 12-6, overturning a 10.5-7.5 against the same club in 2011.

A team effort saw the 3 couples take 4.5, 4 and 3.5 sets respectively against Retford with brother/sister pairing of Eddie Blount and Charlotte staples topping the sets won column.  Fitting as the 2 have been playing in the team for 10 years now!

As recently as 2004 no team from the club had ever been above Division 4 in the Nott’s League.  In 2014 all our 1st teams will be playing in the top 3 Divisions.  Huge credit goes to our small bunch of team players who make themselves available to play match after match.  Without such commitment we wouldn’t be playing in the top divisions.

With a couple of Juniors making good progress this summer we hope next summer won’t be quite so daunting!

Singles Finals Day 2013

The Singles Finals days was held on a glorious sunny Sunday morning at the Club.  Many from the club were enticed up with the promise of cakes and good tennis.  At least one of these promises was fulfilled!

Female Singles Winner: Katie Fuller

Male Singles Winner: Chris Holmes

Female Singles Finalist: Angela Blount

Male Singles Finalist: Eddie Blount

Thanks to Jenny Outram-Hughes who organised for a flyover from the Red Arrows during the Men’s final as an apology for her absence!

FIRST EVER FOR LADIES TEAM

After moving up a division this year we expected hard matches so were pleased with results of 4 wins and 1 close loss (81/2 – 91/2) to Musters. Unfortunately (or fortunately) Musters lost their last match , but although equal points Ravenshead win the league and go up to the dizzy heights of division 3 on set totals!!!

The number of lady members is small so makes it even more incredible that we have managed to get to this level. This has never been attained before in the history of Ravenshead Tennis Club, so well done to all and we look forward to more challenging matches next season.

DIVISION 3 HERE WE COME  !!!!!!!

Geoff Perry Trophy

The 2nd Annual Geoff Perry Trophy was played last Saturday at the 2nd attempt.  The weather nearly got in the way again but cleared up just in time for a sunny, windy afternoon.

Not the largest turnout with only 3 ladies but competitive nonetheless.  Going into the final set of round robin matches Arthur Buckley looked in prime position to take the 2nd qualifying spot for the final but only won 1 of his last 8 games.  That left Craig Flint and Conan Bellas in a tie for 2nd.  They agreed to have a quick best of 3 games singles match to decide the outcome.  Even then it was a little quicker than expected with Conan pulling a muscle in the 1st game, being forced to retire.

The final proved to be a little one sided with regular doubles pair of Chris Holmes and Denise Ferriman taking the trophy with a 6-0 win over Craig and Angela Blount.

Our club tournaments are always a bit of competitive fun.  The format is always round robin and you don’t need a partner to enter, just turn up and play.

2012 Notts LTA Awards Ceremony

5 members of the Club attended the Notts LTA Awards Ceremony held at Notts County Football Ground.  The club was there to receive the Mens Division 3 Trophy and the Ladies Division 5 Trophy which were won during the Summer 2012 season.

An added bonus was the Windbreak we won in a raffle courtesy of Head Tennis.  The Windbreak can now be found on court 2.
