1st Men’s team battle to draw against Woodthorpe.

Ravenshead Vs Woodthorpe.  A match that would go a long way to deciding who is going to join Magdala in promotion to Division 1.

3-3 after the 1st round of matches followed by 6-6 after round 2 meant it was all to play for going into the final round of matches.

Ravenshead’s 1st pairing of Chris Holmes and Barry Seamons, unbeaten to date when paired together were really up against it and struggling against Woodthorpe’s 1st pair.

Trailing 5-3 in the opening set Chris and Barry saved over a dozen set points to tie the set 6-6.  With the first set having taken so long it soon became apparent that the 2nd set was winner takes all.  Once the other matches had finished Chris and Barry again found themselves trailing, this time 5-2!  The situation combined with everyone watching saw tension levels and pressure rise to unprecedented levels on court 2 (measured by the amount of shouted ‘come on’s!), not helped by a temporary light failure at 5-2 30-30!.  Once again Chris and Barry saved multiple set points, managing to hold their nerve ever so slightly better to comeback and also halve the 2nd set 6-6.  There was some at times ugly tennis due to the pressure, one can’t begin to imagine what it’s like in a Grand Slam final!!

At first believing that a draw was not enough, the result does give the team a slim promotion to Division 1, requiring Woodthorpe to lose their last match of the season against West Bridgford ‘A’ 12.5-5.5 or worse.

Thanks to Eddie Blount, Jon Banner, Craig Flint and Arthur Buckley who all won set’s to help the team to a great result against a club with twice as many courts (that they own) and many, many more members.  A clue as to the mismatch on paper is in the number of Summer League teams each club has.  Ravenshead=3, Woodthorpe=13.  It wasn’t so long ago we were playing their 4th Men’s team. 🙂

Promotion to Division 1 for the Mixed Team

Sunday September 15th marked a truly historic day in the Clubs History.  Following a home win against Retford the 1st Mixed team will spend 2014 among the top teams in the County after gaining promotion from Division 2.  The match was won 12-6, overturning a 10.5-7.5 against the same club in 2011.

A team effort saw the 3 couples take 4.5, 4 and 3.5 sets respectively against Retford with brother/sister pairing of Eddie Blount and Charlotte staples topping the sets won column.  Fitting as the 2 have been playing in the team for 10 years now!

As recently as 2004 no team from the club had ever been above Division 4 in the Nott’s League.  In 2014 all our 1st teams will be playing in the top 3 Divisions.  Huge credit goes to our small bunch of team players who make themselves available to play match after match.  Without such commitment we wouldn’t be playing in the top divisions.

With a couple of Juniors making good progress this summer we hope next summer won’t be quite so daunting!

Singles Finals Day 2013

The Singles Finals days was held on a glorious sunny Sunday morning at the Club.  Many from the club were enticed up with the promise of cakes and good tennis.  At least one of these promises was fulfilled!

Female Singles Winner: Katie Fuller

Male Singles Winner: Chris Holmes

Female Singles Finalist: Angela Blount

Male Singles Finalist: Eddie Blount

Thanks to Jenny Outram-Hughes who organised for a flyover from the Red Arrows during the Men’s final as an apology for her absence!

Mixed Fortunes for the Men

The Men’s first team suffered their first defeat of the season (and first since 2011) at the hands of Magdala ‘A’.  It was always going to be an uphill battle after Conan Bellas damaged his hamstring in the 1st set of the match and despite bravely attempting to play on for 4 sets was barely able to move.  The match still went down to the final rubber where we eventually lost 10-8.

Another home match against West Bridgford ‘A’ saw the team return to winning ways with a thumping 15-3 win in front of a bumper crowd of 3.  Eddie Blount and Jon Banner showed what a competitive bunch the men are by fighting tooth and nail in the last set of the match to win 0.5 against West Bridgford’s strongest pair on the day.  Just what the Captain likes. 🙂

West Brigford showed us a glimpse of their future with some young twins playing for them.  They didn’t manage to win many games (I’m sure they will next year) but went home a bit happier after firing down an ace past Barry Seamons from our first pair, much to the delight of the server and Barry’s partner! 1st Men’s Team win away at Woodthorpe.

Last night saw the battle of last years 2 promoted teams take place with our 1st Men’s team taking on Woodthorpe ‘A’.  We were faced with a much stronger Woodthorpe team compared to the one we beat last summer.

This team’s ability to dig in and win vital sets shone through as Conan Bellas and Craig Flint won the last 3 games of the 2nd rubber to take the set 7-5 against Woodthorpe’s top pair.

This gave Ravenshead an 8-4 lead going into the final round of matches which meant Ravenshead could win the match utilising just top pair Chris Holmes and Barry Seamons against the 3rd pair from Woodthorpe, easing the pressure on the other 2 pairs.  That proved to be the just the case with an extra 0.5 set won by Edward Blount and Arthur Buckley putting the cherry on cake!

The hard fought result is highlighted by the rare occurrence of winning the match overall but winning fewer games in total (83-80).

An away win on astroturf in Division 2.  Not bad for a hard-court village team! 🙂

1st Mixed Team win Bruising Encounter @ Grantham

The 1st Mixed team won a hard fought match against Grantham 10.5 – 7.5.  With temperatures reaching nearly 30,  stamina was tested to the max.

A ‘bruising’ encounter due to Angela being hit from both sides of the net!  A couple of the men are also sporting some black toenails.  Great team effort I’d say 🙂

Grantham does have an NG postcode even though it seems like it’s halfway to Skegness!

Geoff Perry Trophy

The 2nd Annual Geoff Perry Trophy was played last Saturday at the 2nd attempt.  The weather nearly got in the way again but cleared up just in time for a sunny, windy afternoon.

Not the largest turnout with only 3 ladies but competitive nonetheless.  Going into the final set of round robin matches Arthur Buckley looked in prime position to take the 2nd qualifying spot for the final but only won 1 of his last 8 games.  That left Craig Flint and Conan Bellas in a tie for 2nd.  They agreed to have a quick best of 3 games singles match to decide the outcome.  Even then it was a little quicker than expected with Conan pulling a muscle in the 1st game, being forced to retire.

The final proved to be a little one sided with regular doubles pair of Chris Holmes and Denise Ferriman taking the trophy with a 6-0 win over Craig and Angela Blount.

Our club tournaments are always a bit of competitive fun.  The format is always round robin and you don’t need a partner to enter, just turn up and play.

Mens team off to a flyer (again)!

Ravenshead Men’s team first ever match in Notts League Division 2 started this morning with a convincing 16-2 win away at Caunton.

2012 top pairing of Chris Holmes and Barry Seamons were usurped by 2nd pair Conan Bellas and Craig Flint who took all 6 sets.  Chris and Barry were not far behind with 5.5 sets and will be looking to get back on top at the next match.

The team are not getting too carried away (there were tongue in cheek comments about winning Division 1 next year!) as Caunton were lucky to stay in the Division last summer and tougher tests are expected.

Next up is Woodthorpe…

Division 3 Champions!

The Men’s team have won the Division 3 title with 5 wins out of 5 in the Notts Summer league.  2013 will be the Men’s team first season ever in Division 2; Plenty of practice will be required!!
