Club Champs Singles Report

[written by Tom Lockey]

Wednesday evening saw eight players compete in the clubs singles tournament for their respective titles.

The evening began on court with the Men’s semi-finals, first up was last year’s finalist Arthur Buckley up against Tom Lockey. A couple of close early games proved decisive in the result, with Tom taking the set 6-0 and was the first man in the final. The next Men’s semi-final saw two previous winners, Craig Flint and Ed Blount, go head to head. A tight set was eventually won by Craig 6-4, who managed to outlast Ed in a tiring victory and reach the final for a second consecutive year.

Next up on court was the Ladies final, which saw the Fullers, Jane and Katie, go up against each other for family bragging rights. It was always going to be tough for Jane against her daughter, and so it proved to be, with young Katie managing to overpower Jane and take the set 6-1, to retain her title.

Up next was the Men’s plate final (The Richard Drury Trophy), which featured Rob Harwood and veteran Rick Drury. After a close couple of first games, Rick managed to edge into the lead with a crucial break and never looked back. After entertaining the crowd with some exceptional tennis, he held his nerve and managed to serve out the set to win his maiden Plate trophy, 6-4. Congrats on 5th place.

Last on court was the Men’s final, which saw Tom Lockey trying to overcome last year’s winner Craig Flint. A close match up proved to be so, as the set began with both players having strong holds of serve, a pattern that would not be broken throughout until the score reached 6-6 all. The title would be decided on a tie-break, after Tom went 2-0 up with a mini-break, the third point was a crucial one, as an exhaustive rally was played out with both players hustling around the court, Tom hit a net-cord, which seemingly rolled across the rope for a lifetime before dropping onto Craig’s side of the court. An apology from Tom’s side of the net didn’t seem too believable. A couple of missed opportunities gave Craig some hope, however this proved futile with Tom taking the tie-break 7-2 and with it the Men’s singles title.

A big thank you should go to Angela Blount for organising the event and to her husband Steve for providing the food. Finally, thank you to everyone that turned up and showed support, see you in a year.

Men’s 1st Team Continue Streak

Men’s 1st team continued their Division 1 streak.  Unfortunately the streak is an unwanted winless one!

The team battled hard but went down 13-5 at home to Magdala.  Special mention to Tom Lockey who won his first set in the 1st team (and now has 4 of them) and Ian Staples who was playing in his first match for the club and also managed to pick-up a set.

Mixed team take out Musters in Div 1

As with the Men 2014 is the first year Ravenshead have played in the Notts League Division 1.

Musters (3rd in 2013) were the opposition and home court advantage combined with the fact that none of the Musters men that had soundly beaten Ravenshead Men’s team were in attendance added to the belief that this wasn’t going to be a thrashing.

With 2 of our regular mixed players having babies or enjoying honeymoons and captain Denise having a rest from 1st Mixed duty this summer it meant debuts for Katie Fuller and Karen Harvey.  Both Katie and Karen seemed unfazed by playing in Division 1 and in fact seemed to enjoy a harder ball being hit their way most of the time.

Karen in particular took the attack to the opposition in the first rubber leaving her partner Chris Holmes with little more to do then clear up at the net or fetch more balls for Karen to whack!.

Ravenshead won the first 2 rubbers 4-2 and 3.5-2.5 to leave the scores 7.5-4.5 going into the final rubber.  A step up in play and a calf injury hampering Musters first pairing male meant 4.5 of the final 6 sets came Ravenshead way along with a 12-6 victory.

Played 1, won 1 – 100% record.  Not sure it will stay that way!!! 🙂

1st Mens Vs Musters

After being on the end of a 17-1 hammering in the clubs first ever Division 1 match, a trip away to visit the reigning champions Musters would not have seen short odds on a Ravenshead win.

An improved performance still ended in a 15.5-2.5 defeat.  2 sets for 1st pair Chris Holmes and Barry Seamons who are starting to recover from injuries (not yet though) and 0.5 sets for Ed Blount and Craig Flint who also had a tough battle against the Musters 3rd pair and were unlucky not to gain more.

Two tough away matches on astroturf are out of the way.  I’m sure the remaining matches will also be tough but a return to hardcourts should hopefully improve our chances of sneaking a victory.

Welcome to Division 1!!!

The Mens team played their first ever match in Division 1 tonight.  Up against a very strong David Lloyd West Bridgford side including former World 146 Allen Belobrajdic and former World ranked doubles player David Barton,  Ravenshead lost 17-1.  It’s never nice to lose but it’s good to appreciate being on court with some high quality tennis players.

Hopefully they will all not be so tough although the next 2 matches are also away which doesn’t help.

Man of the Match: Tom Lockey who was still smiling at the end having passed his driving test just a few hours earlier 🙂

Back to the practice courts guys!

Ravenshead win Notts LTA Club Champs (Shh don’t tell David Lloyd!!)

Notts LTA Club Champions Tournament  2013

This is an invitational tournament for all Notts LTA affiliated tennis clubs to submit their club champion winner (or runner up in their absence). Competitions were run for ladies and mens singles and doubles. Representing Ravenshead: Craig and Eddie in the mens doubles and Eddie for the mens singles, but also appearing in the mens doubles was Ravenshead’s first mens pair Chris and Barry and Chris in the singles.

27 July 2013 Men Doubles
Entry numbers into the tournament were a little disappointing, teams included Mansfield, Welbeck, David Lloyd Nottm (aka Ravenshead) and Ravenshead. The format was one set against each pair with the top two to battle out in a final for the championship and their names scratched into the honours board at the Notts LTA County Ground in the Park.

The weather was fantastic  – tennis as it was supposed to be played, on a lawn (and below the knees).

The first draw for Ravenshead was against Welbeck, an unknown to us. It was a close game, at 5-6 down Ravenshead had chances to take it to 6 all, but Welbeck proved strong and came out on top 7-5.  The second round was a grudge match against Chris and Barry, who had been pushed hard by Mansfield in the first round but came out on top. Chris and Barry dominated throughout and came out victorious (6-1).  The final round against Mansfield and was a fight between third and forth. Mansfield looked wounded coming off two defeats and Craig’s drive volleys and net cords were a sign that Ravenshead were back. Comfortable winners 6-3, but it was all too late.

Chris and Barry moved into the final with 3 wins and looking confident as a short break was taken, Chris tucked into his picnic box (why anyone keeps crisps in a cool box I do not know!!), Barry had been baking sausage rolls (and very good they were too).

As Chris and Barry stepped onto the court, they looked like the were walking onto the hallowed turf of Wimbledon, dressed in their whites. Barry asked for a special mention on his new Roger Federer Nike polo shirt, purchased specifically for the occasion. The crowds were 3 deep in places, well maybe momentarily.  The final was best of 3 sets.  A slow start for Chris and Barry and the set was nearly over, 3-5 and 3 set points to Welbeck, Barry had a short conversation with the fence. I am not sure what motivational words the fence had to say but momentum switched as they moved on to take the set 7-5. The second set was wrapped up reasonably quickly and Ravensheads top mens pair came out winners of the Notts LTA Mens Doubles Champions.

Overall, a good day of tennis and as the club is not scratched into the honours board, Ravenshead we can consider our club mens doubles club champions!!

Well done Chris and Barry.

28 July 2013 Mens Singles
After overnight rain we were moved onto familiar ground, hard courts (tennis as we know it – backs against the fence with loads of top spin).

Entry numbers again were disappointing with 6 entries from W. Bridgford, Welbeck, Mansfield, Keyworth, DL and Ravenshead.  The format was one set against each person, with the top two playing a best of 3 set final (if your not thinking this already, that is a lot of singles tennis).

As the first players to arrive the Chris v Eddie match was first up.  After Eddie taking a 3-2 lead Chris started to pick on Eddie’s weak links (I won’t disclose what that weakness might be!!).  Chris took the set 6-3.

The West Bridgford entry appeared the bookies early favourite, known by the organisers, name already on the honours board, son of an GB tennis coach and a regular on the national tour. As the sets fell by, his odds grew shorter, quickly despatching opponents to love (Eddie included, but “I did get to 40 on 3 occasions”) and Chris took 2 games off him. It became a race for the runners up spot between Chris and Mansfield. Mansfield came out on top taking the crucial set 7-5.  Chris claimed third spot (winning three sets) and Eddie fifth (with one victory).

As the final started the galleries were getting noisy with excitement as a shock looked on the cards in the first set.  The organisers asked for silence, boo, this was the ‘Peoples Sunday’ we had our underdog from Mansfield to support.  WB came out on top 6-4, 6-2 (I think). The winner received a sword (what a prize!!).

Men’s Team Promoted to Division 1

Following the recent 9-9 draw against Woodthorpe the 1st Men’s team were left with a slim chance of promotion, needing Woodthorpe to lose quite heavily against West Bridgford ‘A’, a team that had struggled so far this season.

The result the team needed duly happened, with Woodthorpe losing 13-5 to enable us to hang on to the 2nd promotion spot by 1 set, ending level on points with Woodthorpe!

Thanks to Jon Banner, Conan Bellas,  Eddie Blount,  Arthur Buckley, Craig Flint, Chris Holmes,  Tom Lockey and Barry Seamons who all played a part in the teams promotion.

This makes it back to back promotion for all 3 of Ravenshead’s 1st teams.  Each team will be playing in the highest Division achieved in the clubs history.  Pretty good 2013 I would say. 🙂

Clabburn Trophy Result 2013

The Clabburn Tournament was played on a sunny Saturday afternoon.  The format was a type of round robin mixed doubles.  No partner is required to play, you just turn up!

Winners were Chris Holmes and Jane Fuller, beating Craig Flint and Angela Blount 6-4 in the final.

Thanks to all those who attended and especially those who brought cakes and cookies, yum!
